Deep Dive 🔍
  • Alibaba's Qwen2: A new benchmark in open source language models 📊

Alibaba’s cloud computing division, Qwen, has launched Qwen2, the latest iteration of its advanced language model, available in sizes ranging from 0.5 to 72 billion parameters. This version features significant enhancements in programming, mathematics, logic, and multilingual comprehension. Trained on data across 29 languages and capable of handling contexts up to 128,000 tokens, Qwen2 aims to accelerate applications and commercial use by adopting the Apache 2.0 license for most models, excluding the largest ones. The team intends to develop even larger and multimodal models in the future.

  • Cara soars as artists reject Meta's AI policies

Cara, an anti-AI social platform, saw its user base skyrocket from 40,000 to 650,000 in just one week. This rapid growth is attributed to artists' dissatisfaction with Meta's AI policies, which use public posts for AI training without proper consent. Jingna Zhang, Cara's founder, aims to create a safe space for artists to share their work without fear of it being used in AI datasets. Despite the surge, Cara faces challenges like unexpected expenses and maintaining growth without venture funding.

  • U.S. antitrust scrutiny on Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia 🕵️‍♂️

U.S. antitrust regulators have agreed on a joint investigation into the AI activities of Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia. The DOJ will lead the inquiry into Nvidia, while the FTC will focus on Microsoft and OpenAI. Microsoft, holding a $13 billion stake in OpenAI, is also under FTC scrutiny for its $650 million deal with Inflection AI. An official investigation may begin soon, with the EU also examining Microsoft's ties to OpenAI.

  • Kuaishou introduces KLING, a text-to-video AI model rivalling Sora 🎬

Chinese tech company Kuaishou has launched KLING, a new AI model that generates high-quality videos up to 2 minutes long, challenging OpenAI’s Sora. KLING produces videos at 30fps, 1080p quality, featuring realistic and surreal scenes, and uses a 3D space-time attention system for complex motion simulation. Available as a public demo on the KWAI iOS app, KLING is set to heat up the AI video landscape.

  • Meta boosts WhatsApp Business with AI-powered features 🤖

Meta has unveiled AI-powered features for WhatsApp Business, including tools for creating click-to-WhatsApp ads and auto-generating responses to frequent customer queries. Businesses can now use AI to launch Facebook and Instagram ads that initiate WhatsApp chats. AI-powered customer support is being tested in India and Singapore, with plans to expand to Brazil soon. Meta aims to offer these AI tools for free to attract more merchants, driving revenue through increased customer interactions.

  • ByteDance navigates AI chip restrictions by renting Nvidia servers 🛠️

TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is circumventing U.S. restrictions on AI chip exports by renting advanced Nvidia chips and using them in the U.S. Instead of purchasing, ByteDance leases servers with Nvidia’s A100 and H100 chips from Oracle. This loophole allows ByteDance to access over 1,500 H100s and thousands of A100s, with Alibaba and Tencent considering similar strategies. The AI competition between the U.S. and China intensifies as firms find ways to bypass restrictions.

  • OpenAI's new paper dives into GPT-4's concept patterns 🔬

OpenAI has published a paper detailing a method to reverse engineer and understand the concepts learned by AI models, shedding light on ChatGPT’s inner workings. Authored by members of the former superalignment team, the paper outlines a technique to identify patterns within GPT-4 using an additional probing model. This approach has revealed millions of activity patterns, which can now be explored with open-source code and a visualization tool. Understanding AI's inner mechanisms is crucial for improving safety and control.

  • Stable Audio Open: Free AI tool for short-form sound creation 🎵

Stability AI introduces Stable Audio Open, an open-source model designed for short-form audio needs. Unlike its commercially-focused sibling, Stable Audio 2, this model specializes in audio snippets up to 47 seconds. Tailored for sound designers, musicians, and creative professionals, it generates drum beats, instrument riffs, ambient sounds, and foley recordings. Trained with data from FreeSound and the Free Music Archive, it ensures responsible development and creator rights protection. Available on Hugging Face, Stable Audio Open invites customization and feedback.

  • Apple to integrate ChatGPT in iOS 18 as opt-in feature 📱

Apple will integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into iOS 18 as an opt-in feature. The new iOS release, debuting at the WWDC developer event on Monday, includes AI enhancements in the search bar, emoji library, and built-in apps. Apple opted for OpenAI over Google’s Gemini chatbot due to better terms and language models. The update also promises new machine learning features like creating emojis, slideshows, and AI-generated music playlists.

GlazeGPT just announced their industry-leading innovation - text-to-MongoDB queries, a revolutionary feature that translates natural language into precise MongoDB queries.🔥This latest update empowers users to effortlessly interact with complex MongoDB datasets and generates complex queries in seconds while understanding your business glossary.
