  • U.S. imposes export curbs on Nvidia & AMD AI Chips to certain Middle Eastern countries 🖥️🚫

    The U.S. has expanded its restriction on the export of Nvidia and AMD AI chips beyond China to other regions, including some countries in the Middle East. The curbs, which affect Nvidia's A100 and H100 chips and AMD's MI250 chips, are imposed for national security reasons. Nvidia and AMD have stated that the restrictions would not have an immediate impact on their revenue.

  • OpenAI angles to put ChatGPT in classrooms with special tutor prompts 📚

    OpenAI wants teachers to bring ChatGPT into classrooms for everything from language help to role-playing to creating new quiz questions. It has released a guide for teachers using ChatGPT in their classroom—including suggested prompts, an explanation of how ChatGPT works and its limitations, the efficacy of AI detectors, and bias.   • Meta’s FACET: A new yardstick for AI fairness in computer vision models 🔍

    Meta introduces FACET — a tortured acronym for “FAirness in Computer Vision EvaluaTion”, an AI benchmark aimed at assessing biases in computer vision models. With 32,000 images containing 50,000 people labeled by human annotators, it accounts for classes related to occupations and activities like “basketball player,” “disc jockey” and “doctor” in addition to demographic and physical attributes, allowing for what Meta describes as “deep” evaluations of biases against those classes. It is also releasing a new, expanded license (Apache 2.0) for their DINOv2 model. Despite past missteps in AI ethics, Meta claims FACET offers unprecedented thoroughness. 👁️‍🗨️


  • Microsoft might just redefine wearables by swapping the smartwatch for a smart backpack with AI features ⌚ ➡️ 🎒

    Microsoft could take wearable tech to the next level with a backpack that comes with its own AI assistant. This nifty pack could scan the area around you and give advice—be it directions, object identification, or even ski route suggestions. But let's not get too excited; it's just a patent for now.🗺️🎿


  • Google’s generative AI search experience expands to India and Japan 🔍️ 

    Google is bringing its generative AI search experience, SGE (Search Generative Experience), to India and Japan. The new feature includes support for local languages, voice input, and a new way to discover web pages. In Japan, SGE will support generative AI in the local language. In India, SGE will support both English and Hindi with a language toggle and voice input. Search ads will continue to appear in dedicated ad slots across the page in both countries. 👩‍💻🌐



  • China gives green light to homegrown AI Chatbots 📱

    China has granted approval to eight generative AI applications for public use, including Baidu's Ernie Bot and ByteDance's Doubao. The successful filings of these LLM chatbots could lead to rapid growth and mass adoption in China. China has created licensing frameworks to regulate its tech industry and have more oversight over data. Generative AI is highly regulated in China, requiring registration and administrative licenses for service providers. 🛡️


  • Qualcomm targets auto sector with AI chips 🚗

    Qualcomm is upping its game in the car chip market using AI technology. By flaunting its chips' ability to run AI car helpers, the company aims to carve out a larger slice of this growing market. Although cars account for just 3% of Qualcomm's current sales, they’re projecting a jump to $9 billion by 2031. They're facing stiff rivalry from Intel and Nvidia but are committed to being an AI powerhouse in this sector. 🥊 📈 


  • Intel’s new Xeon Duo: Fast & efficient P-cores & E-cores 🎮 🍃


    At Hot Chips 2023, Intel pulled back the curtain on its new Xeon processors: P-cores for performance and E-cores for energy efficiency. Known as Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids, these chips focus on either saving energy or boosting core speed, and they’re compatible with AI and machine learning applications. Availability is planned for the first half of 2024, set to refresh the Xeon lineup. 🗓️


  • OpenAI defends ChatGPT against copyright claims 📚⚖️

    OpenAI is challenging a lawsuit brought by authors who say ChatGPT used pirated books for training. The company aims to toss out claims like DMCA violations and copyright infringement, suggesting the authors are misguided about the law. OpenAI refers to past legal cases to argue its actions are lawful and wants to clarify that not every ChatGPT output should be considered a derivative work. 📑🚫
