Deep Dive 🔍
  • GPT-4’s the dumbest model you’ll ever see 💹

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman anticipates significantly more advanced AI models than GPT-4 in the future, considering GPT-4 as "by far the dumbest model" compared to what lies ahead. “I don’t care whether the company burns $500 million or $50 billion 💰️ a year—as long as it stays on a trajectory for creating AGI, it will be worth it." Additionally, he clarified during a separate talk at Harvard University that the mysterious gpt2-chatbot model on Lmsys was not GPT 4.5.

  • OpenAI to enter the Search wars? 🔍️

News has emerged suggesting that OpenAI could be on the brink of launching its own search engine. Two indicators point to this development: the appearance of "search.chatgpt.com" in server log files and rumors circulating about OpenAI launching a search engine on May 9th. Who will win in the Google Search vs Perplexity vs OpenAI search is poised to be a trillion-dollar question. 😟

  • Microsoft signs largest-ever 10.5 GW renewable energy deal for AI Growth 🎐

Brookfield Asset Management, Brookfield Renewable, and Microsoft have signed a global renewable energy framework agreement to accelerate Microsoft’s goal of 100% zero-carbon energy purchases by 2030. The agreement outlines plans for over 10.5 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity, nearly eight times larger than the largest single corporate PPA ever signed. Brookfield will deliver this capacity between 2026 and 2030, focusing on wind, solar, and other carbon-free energy technologies.

  • Microsoft invested in robotics company developing LBMs for robotics 🤖

Microsoft invested in Sanctuary AI, a Vancouver-based startup specializing in humanoid robots. This collaboration aims to expedite the development of AI models for general-purpose humanoid robots, including Sanctuary's Phoenix robot. Sanctuary AI is focused on creating "Large Behavior Models" (LBMs) that ground AI in the physical world, allowing robots to understand and learn from real-world experiences. Microsoft also recently invested $675 million in the robotics company Figure. 😅

  • Microsoft bans US Police’s use of facial recognition AI 📸

Microsoft has strengthened its prohibition on U.S. police departments using generative AI for facial recognition through Azure OpenAI Service. The updated terms of service explicitly forbid integrations with the service for facial recognition by U.S. law enforcement, including potential future image-analyzing models. The ban also extends globally, prohibiting real-time facial recognition on mobile cameras. This change follows concerns raised by Axon's use of OpenAI’s GPT-4 for audio summarization from body cameras. However, the ban only applies to U.S. police and allows facial recognition in controlled environments and for international law enforcement. Is this a win for privacy or just a stepping stone? 🤕
